Planting Design

Layered. Natural. Connected to Place

Great planting design is more than selecting attractive plants. It is about creating a landscape that feels intentional, responds to its surroundings, and becomes richer over time.

DELA develops thoughtful Planting Designs that combine trees, shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, groundcovers, and seasonal interest into cohesive landscapes appropriate to the architecture, site, and character of the property.

Thoughtful Planting Design

Each planting plan considers:

  • Existing trees and surrounding vegetation
  • Sun, shade, soils, and site conditions
  • Scale and relationship to architecture
  • Layering, texture, color, and seasonal interest
  • Native and regionally appropriate plants
  • Pollinator and wildlife value
  • Screening, privacy, and views
  • Long-term growth and maintenance
  • Plant diversity and resilience

Trees as the Foundation

Trees provide structure, shade, habitat, seasonal character, and a sense of permanence within the landscape.

Where appropriate, DELA incorporates canopy and understory trees as the framework for planting design, with shrubs, perennials, grasses, and groundcovers creating additional layers beneath and around them.

Designed for Life

Planting can do more than beautify a property.

Thoughtfully selected plant communities can support pollinators, birds, beneficial insects, and other wildlife while improving biodiversity and creating landscapes that change naturally through the seasons.

The goal is not simply to fill planting beds, but to create a landscape that feels layered, enduring, and connected to place. Thoughtfully composed. Naturally refined.
